Antigua’s Sailing Week, April 26-May 2, 2014

April 25th, 2014

World Class Racing

With a blend of blue water, warm, steady trade winds, and seemingly endless harbors to explore, Antigua is a fantastic yachting and sailing destination.  Here in Antigua we even have our own version of The America’s Cup – Antigua Sailing Week.

Sailing Week is one of the world’s foremost sailing events and is renowned for world-class racing and all-night partying. It takes place from April 26, 2014 through May 2, 2014.

This year 21 different countries will bring their yachts to compete in the regatta’s 46th anniversary, with thrills and spills guaranteed!  Antigua’s Sailing Week has consistently graced international sailing aficionados’ calendars. Some of the races in this year’s regatta schedule include the Guadeloupe to Antigua Race, the Yachting World Round Antigua Race, and the English Harbour Rum Runner.

Throughout the island there will also be numerous parties.  Ask our Concierge and he’ll be sure to point you in the right direction.

If you feel you’ve had too much of the regattas you can always return home to Jolly Beach Resort.  Here, even when the sea may be rough, our beach is stunning and calm and the water is super refreshing.  If you don’t feel like participating in the week’s after-hours’ parties, Jolly Beach Resort also has nightly entertainment, including a casino, shows, and dancing.

Make All of Your Wedding Fantasies Come True

April 25th, 2014

Your Big Day!

With 22 years of experience there isn’t anything that will ruffle Ms. Beverly King’s feathers.  She is Jolly Beach Resort’s wedding coordinator, and from intimate ceremonies on the beach to lavish family affairs, she has seen it all and survived it all – with grace and nerves of steel.

The largest wedding Ms. King has organized consisted of 200 people.  “No problem,” she said.  “It was all coordinated via email and went off without a hitch.”

So we asked her, “C’mon Ms. King.  Every wedding has drama. Tell us some of the dramas you’ve survived!”  Ms. King chuckled, and kept her lips zipped. But, as a master of making bride’s wedding fantasies come true, she did share with us a few stories – special ways she has been able to accommodate specific requests.

Once Upon a Time…

There was once a lovely bride who lived in a town with no palm trees, and, as such, desperately wanted a palm tree in her photos when she got married in Antigua. “I approached one of the resort’s gardeners,” said Ms. King, “and enquired whether there was a palm tree that could be relocated.” The gardener found and relocated a newly planted palm tree – and voila! Happy bride.

In another wedding, the bride had an inspiration picture from a wedding that had taken place in Mexico. Ms. King’s response? “No problem – I aim to please.” As she told us, “I love my job. There’s nothing more romantic than planning a wedding!”

The Caribbean’s Greatest Summer Festival

April 25th, 2014

Queen Of Carnival

Antigua Carnival – this is one holiday that ALL Antiguans look forward to with high expectations.  Why?  Because it’s a time of year when everybody lets their hair down and focuses exclusively on having fun!  The carnival is a celebration of music, dance, and food – an 11 day festival of vibrant costumes, beauty pageants, talent shows, and really great music.  Think New Orleans’ Mardi Gras, but with a Calypso rhythm.

Popular Carnival Events

  1. The Queen of Carnival is always chosen by popular applause after several competitions, including those for evening gown, talent, swimsuit, interview, and best costume. The show is the most prestigious and coveted pageant title in Antigua and Barbuda, and local talent for design and pageantry is especially evident in these competitions.
  2. Local Steel Drum Bands, typically comprised by neighbourhoods, will also compete, going all out to win a monetary prize. The bands also play during the parade, accompanied by their krewes, groups of followers wearing costumes that they have designed and sewn themselves.  Some of these costumes are very elaborate and costly.
  3. Children’s Events: two popular children’s events include the Jr. Calypso Competition and the Children’s Carnival Parade.  The crowd often goes wild with enthusiasm and support for the kids during both of these events.

When You Need a Break

Spicy and rhythmic, with a rainbow of colors, Antigua Carnival is a great way to get a taste of the local culture, but if you want a break from the festivities, come on back to Jolly Beach Resort & Spa for a bit of down time.

Lounge on a world-class beach (Antigua’s best) or splash around in protected turquoise waters, grab a drink poolside and dive into a great novel, or simply avoid the lines at Carnival for savory Jerk chicken and other scrumptious meals in one of our resort’s 5 on-site restaurants.

You can even drop your kids off at the Jolly Kidz Club or Jolly Teenz Club, both offering a full schedule of activities your kids will love, while you go out and enjoy some Carnival time on your own.

Simply click to Book Online or call our reservations department to book your stay during Antigua Carnival.

6 Ways to Treat the Queen

April 25th, 2014

The Royal Treatment

She’s the Queen of your castle, the mother to your children – the hardworking woman your family loves and adores.

With Mother’s Day fast approaching, treating the woman in your life to an all inclusive vacation in Antigua at Jolly Beach Resort & Spa is one sure way of letting her know how much you truly care. The only thing she’ll HAVE to do is have fun. We’ll take care of everything else.

It’s a gift that keeps on giving, too – with 6 bonus ways you can treat her as the Queen she really is while you’re here:

  1. Get That Mama Glowing
Moms work hard and often don’t get a lot of pampering time for themselves, but they deserve a break every now and again! Send your special lady for a day of indulgence at our lovely spa, the Palms Wellness Centre. Don’t forget to ask for the Couple’s Massage so you can relax right next to her!
  2. Chef’s Night Off Deciding what to have, making it, and then cleaning up afterwards every single night can be a bit of a chore. We know she’ll love being treated to a yummy or romantic meal out – and with 5 all inclusive restaurants to choose from at Jolly Beach Resort, she can pick a different restaurant every day of your holiday! Italian, Indian, Seafood, an Antiguan brunch buffet with a steel band playing in the background…give her the gift of a few nights off.
  3. Hanging Out on Antigua’s Best Beach – by a Mile
Powdery white sand, turquoise waters lapping up on the sand, the glorious sun warming everything it touches… from sunbathing to spicy beach volleyball games, a little beach therapy will do her a world of good!
Hand in hand walks on the beach and building sand castles with the kids are other great ways to create family memories at Jolly Beach and enjoy a relaxing day celebrating Mom.
  4. Poolside, If You Please The kids can splash around while she curls up poolside with a book and refreshing tropical drink. Enough said.
  5. Quality Time with the Kids Being a mother brings her incredible joy, so celebrate her role as a mom with some quality family time. Our Think Jolly Family Program is a line-up of three family-friendly activity modules that include adventure, sports, and relaxation. Sign up for one, two, or all three and get ready to laugh together, play together, and bond as a family.
  6. A Night Off From the Kids
She’s a mom, and may sometimes feel overworked, overwhelmed, and just plain stressed, so a night out without the kids could also be the perfect gift for her this Mother’s Day – plus, it can also be a relationship booster.
If you want to have her all to yourself for a night, drop the kids off at the Kidz Club and our staff will be more than happy to entertain and look after your children while you treat her like the Queen that she is.

Motherhood is one of the toughest jobs out there. Are you ready to show her how much you appreciate everything she does for you?

Click to Book Online or contact our Reservations Department and give her a Mother’s Day she’ll never forget.

Culinary Cupid

April 25th, 2014

Classical to Fusion Cuisine

Within the confines of our kitchens we have a tightly-kept secret and he has a name – Mr. Ralston Williams, Jolly Beach Resort’s Executive Chef (EC).  EC Ralston has been in this business for well over 34 years.  Antiguan-born, he was raised in the UK where he obtained his degree from Oxford.

He’s the man in charge of Jolly Beach Resort’s 5 on-site restaurants, a bouquet of Italian, Indian, and Seafood a la carte restaurants, grilled catch of the day, grab-and-go beach fare, buffet smorgasbord, and even afternoon high tea.

EC Ralston told us that when he was an up-and-coming chef, things had a certain order.  He refers to that style of cooking as “classical.” “There was a reason for certain ingredients, spices, and herbs to be used in certain dishes,” he says. “Today, cooking styles have shifted from classical to fusion, and I’ve adapted. It’s all about making people happy.”

Here’s another kitchen secret: EC Ralston is considered the resort’s “Culinary Cupid.” Why? Aside from baking, his passion is to make up menus for couples.  Jolly Beach Resort & Spa hosts innumerable couples, and whether it’s for a couple who is celebrating an anniversary, a couple who has gotten married at the resort, a honeymooning couple, or simply a couple wishing to have an intimate dinner for two – this is where EC Ralston goes all out.  In his own words, “I LOVE writing up those menus!”

So, in the spirit of culinary love, we want to hear from you! Visit Jolly Beach Resort on Facebook and leave us a comment. Tell us:

  1. What would you order if you were a couple dining at one of our restaurants? Your dream menu…
  2. What’s the best meal you’ve ever had at Jolly Beach Resort?
